Hello, my name is Tawuana Salinas.  This is my 16th year in education with the majority in the Austin and Houston area.  A little about me, I graduated from St. Edward’s University Austin, Texas with a double major in Spanish and International Business. I am certified to teach EC-6, Bilingual and Special Education and a Master’s in Special Education with focus on Autism and Developmental Disabilities. I have two daughters Melissa (15 years old) and Shea (10 years old), 2 dogs and a rabbit. This year Mrs. Gabriela Barrera and Mrs. Carolina Guerrero will be working with us!

Mrs. Guerrero attended South Texas College and earned her Associate’s degree in EC-6. She has worked as a Special Education aide for 3 years and is excited to start this school year at Martinez Elementary! She enjoys spending time with her husband and their Grate Dane, Sophie.

Mrs. Barrera attended the University of Texas Pan American and earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Rehabilitative Services. She has been with us since February. She has three kids Azael (11 years old), Kamila (8 years old) and Alondra (7 years old) and a little Yorkshire dog (Luna). She loves spending time with her husband and kids and doing arts and crafts. She also loves to dance! She is looking forward to a great year!

Our classroom utilizes Zones by Zone into Autism, creating a very structured learning environment. We use evidence-based practices and strategies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Discrete Trial Training, Differentiation Training, Pivotal Response Training, Reinforcement, Prompting, Modeling, Peer Mediated Intervention, Social Stories, and Visual Supports, to name a few. In our classroom we follow a daily visual schedule, allowing us see what our day has planned for us. We work with a specialized curriculum which is aligned to follow the TEKS.

In our classroom our ULTIMATE goal is INDEPENDENCE! One area that is very important for our independence is the restroom. We will be working hard to save you money by helping you get our students potty trained.  This is a NO DIAPER ZONE!!!   If you must… Please send pull ups that latch at the sides, wipes and an extra change of clothes, just in case we need them!

We are super excited about working with you and your child this school year!  I know that working together; we will have a successful year.  Please remember, we are here to help you as much as you are here to help us.  Let me know if you have any questions or need anything I may assist you with.
